Reflux?

I am 47 and I'm not sure if its reflux or not. I know what that back-wash taste tastes like but I just don't know. I've had a little sore throat all day that I hear others refer to and my tongue and lips are all tingly and a litte metallic tasting. I am very tight again and my doctor is out of the country for another week and than I will be away. The next time that I could possibly go see him is Aug. 10. I am eating but not all the time. Liquids take a very long time to go down in the a.m. but by the afternoon, I loosen up. I am only able to eat very little before I get "the backed up feeling". Sometimes it comes up and other times I can work through it. Should I be worried?

Oh, and don't worry...I have no problem gettng those pretzel m&m's down!

If you can still get liquids down you are ok. It sucks when solids don't go down but if you can survive on the liquids your band might loosen up. You read my story and I needed such a tiny little unfil. Did the trick though. Have you tried some Tums or Zantac (over the counter antacid). At least it will take the acid feeling away. But listen to your body. Is there an emergency number/on call doc you can see?

My mantra is, if I can keep fluids down and don't get stuck on something stupid like applesauce I am ok. If not, see doc.

I hope you do better. I found hot liquids (broth and coffee) or cold liquids (milkshakes or ice water) seemed to help.

I had this, it is reflux. Yuck! I had an unfill and felt tons better. I know you had one too, but you might need some more taken out.

In the meanwhile, if you can get liquids down, here's what I was told to do to feel better:

1. absolutely no eating or drinking at least three hours before bed or lying down. For me, I tried to stop around 7 pm. It made a big difference.

2. Every afternoon, take a Prolosec. Even if you feel ok.

3. Stay away from spicey foods, tomato sauce, acidy stuff.

Good luck, darlin'! I know how miserable you are. You are going to be ok until you see the doc, but it won't be fun.

It sounds like you may need an unfill, but way sooner than August 10. Is there anywhere else you can go? Having reflux is an EMERGENCY as my doctor says, because it can cause serious damage with the band. Reflux with the band means you are too tight and it can cause erosion among other things. My doctor says that if I have reflux I have to come in immediately! I would see if you can get an unfill from someone else? Definitely sounds too tight to me!

No advice but I just wanted to say "feel better".

Jacquie, I remember Dr. D telling me that if it is an emergency he will have someone who can take care of you if needed. Call Rebecca in the office and see who he has covering for him in cases like these...See you tomorrow!!

Hey Jacquie my doc said to suck on a Tum if this ever happens.. if its really bad though you do need to get this addressed.. but like the others said if you can hang in there with liquids and protein drinks till your doc gets back you should be ok.. but you know your body best.. thanks for all of the encouraging comments that you have posted on my blog.. means a bunch to me! hugs!

I had the sore throat for 2 weeks and now its my sign that I need to go easy... it comes and goes from time to time...

Sounds like you need an unfill and some time for it to settle down...

I also had night cough and a stabbing pain between my shoulder blades...

I never want to get like that again as I actaully lost no weight and am still trying to get out of the platue it caused!!

hope you can get seen ASAP!

Hi Jacquie - You've gotten some great advice here. I haven't had the reflux piece yet (thank god), but I did get an unfill once because I couldn't swallow liquids. I might ride it out for a couple of days, doing exactly what people are saying (e.g., sucking on a tums, not eating three hours before bed), and drinking enough liquids to keep you from not being dehydrated. You may loosen up on your own. BUT, if you still feel this way by Wed or Thu, I would definitely get in for a tiny unfill. You don't want to go away still feeling this way. Travel can screw with your band, and if you're already not feeling well, I just wouldn't take that risk.

everyone gave great advice, the only thing I would add would be to take OTC prilosec, prevacid or one of those drugs as directed for the next 2 weeks. I will help keep the reflux down and repair any damage done from the acid. feel better
